Root intrusion is one of the most common causes for drainage problems.  Roots are able to infiltrate your service line through factory joints and cracks in the pipe.  Once roots are established in your service line other debris from drain and toilet water tend to collect on the roots making it difficult for water to pass by. Clay pipe is especially vulnerable to root intrusion.
